The Setup

During the winter of 1934, the luxurious Orient Express travels through Europe on its way from Istanbul to Western Europe. The train is unexpectedly halted by a snowdrift in the isolated, freezing mountains. Among the diverse group of passengers are a wealthy American tycoon named Samuel Ratchett and the renowned Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Ratchett, having received death threats, begs Poirot to investigate, but the detective declines

• Hercule Poirot: The iconic, fastidious Belgian detective. He is highly intelligent, observant, and vain, but also possesses a wry sense of humor. Though persnickety, he maintains a deep moral conviction.
• Monsieur Bouc: The director of the train company and a close friend of Poirot. He is good-humored, playful, and serves as a whirlwind of energy and comic relief while trying to navigate the confusing case. 
• Samuel Ratchett: An American businessman. He is a frightening, stern, and domineering mobster-type who is evil at heart and harbors a dangerous past. 
• Helen Hubbard: A boisterous, flamboyant American busybody. She is outspoken, brash, domineering, and unapologetic, serving as a major source of comedy. 
• Mary Debenham: A calm, cool, and unruffled young Englishwoman. She is highly composed and deeply in love with Colonel Arbuthnot.
• Colonel Arbuthnot: A handsome, matter-of-fact Scottish military man. He is straightforward, occasionally tender, and deeply devoted to Mary Debenham. 
• Hector MacQueen: Ratchett’s nervous personal secretary. He is constantly on edge, strained, and appears to be suppressing a hidden secret. 
• Countess Andrenyi: A brilliant, beautiful, and educated Hungarian noblewoman. Though she presents as a fairytale-like aristocrat, she has a sharp, steely edge and is intelligent enough to match wits with Poirot.
• Princess Dragomiroff: An imposing, impatient Russian Dowager. She carries a sweeping, imperial presence and is famously "no one's fool". 
• Greta Ohlsson: A modest, devout Swedish nurse and missionary. She has a frightened, sheeplike quality to her, but harbors a mysterious air. 
• Michel (The Conductor): A good-looking, middle-aged French train conductor. He has a quiet, grave sense of humor and uses his insider knowledge of the train to his advantage.
